Field trips were made with Dent Primary School pupils and other residents to research subjects for the individual plaques that are based on the history, agriculture and landscape of the dale. Working closely with the pupils and other residents, workshops were run to design the plaques using clay maquettes.

The clay maquettes were then cast into gunmetal and inlaid into the gate posts along the footpath. The project was managed and funded by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and the Yorkshire Dales Millenium Trust
